Critical Realism Group at the IoE




The next meeting of the Critical Realism Group at the IoE will be on Tuesday, March 11, in Room 944 at 5:30 p.m.

<> Tone Skinningsrud, Head of the Department of Education in the University of Tromsø (Norway) and General Secretary of the International Association of Critical Realism, will speak on “Comparative Case Studies in the Historical Sociology of Education”. She is here on a brief visit to establish an Erasmus Exchange agreement with the IoE; and also to participate in setting up a European Network for Critical Realism and Education Studies under Framework 7.<>The Critical Realism Group has now been registered as a SIG. As previously announced, there will be meetings of this group next term are on April 15, April 29, May 13, May 27 and June 10. Dylan Wiliam and Gary McCulloch are among confirmed speakers. There will be a day-long seminar on “Critical Realism and Education” on Saturday, May 10, and an international conference on the same theme over July 18 – 20, both here at the IoE. There will be strands at the conference on philosophy and research methods; the sociology of

<>knowledge and education; Bernstein, Bourdieu and implicit critical realism; interdisciplinarity and education; history and education; geography and education; education and emancipation; religious education; Marxism and Vygotsky. (Members of the group may also be interested to know that the annual conference of the International Association of Critical Realism is being held this year at King’s College, London over July 11 – 13; and that the Centre for Critical Realism is organizing a day event on “Networks” at SOAS on April 5.) There will be time at or after the meeting on March 11 to meet Tone Skinningsrud and also to discuss these further events and other activities designed to lead to the formation of a new International Centre for Advanced Studies in Critical Realism and Education, based at the IoE.
